ABOUT THE PROJECT

A project documenting the work of Masatoshi Nishimura, an indigo dyer based in Asakura, Fukuoka.

The photographs follow his hands working with dye and the stages of making, the finished products, and the garments as they are worn.

The dyeing process and the craftsman at work were also documented on film.

The rich colors of indigo and the beauty of the indigo fields from which those colors arise.

Patterns created through the traditional technique of shibori evoke the stars.

The film expresses a world woven from the craftsman’s dedication and skill.
